What to do at the marine park?

The Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park is located at the junction of the Saguenay Fjord and the St. Lawrence River and spans 1,245 km2. The park is accessible from four tourist regions: Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, Côte-Nord, Charlevoix and Bas-Saint-Laurent.
A complete visit to the marine park combines a trip on the fjord or the river, watching marine mammals, including whales, spectacular views and a visit to one of the interpretation centres that showcase marine life and maritime history.

Must-Do Activities

Whales

From the shore or at sea, the marine park is one of the best places in the world to whale watch. Open your eyes and ears wide! You may be surprised by their majestic silhouette and their powerful blowhole.

Spectacular views

Take advantage of larger-than-life landscapes and let your senses awaken. The fiery sunsets, the salty air, the lapping of the waves and the gentle breeze will surely enchant you.

Fjord and river

Immerse yourself in the vastness of the fjord and the river. A sea outing will give you a different perspective of the marine park, featuring: cliffs, islands, lighthouses, and colourful seabeds.

Nature and Culture

Through history and science, discover the secrets of the marine environment and sea life. Activities, exhibits and the passion of the guides will captivate you.

WHALE WATCHING

Whales can be seen from early May to the end of October, at any time of the day. Most species frequent the area during the summer to feed and come to the surface regularly to breathe. Keep your eyes and ears open: a whale could appear nearby, visible by its blowhole, back or tail fin.

Yes, it’s actually one of the elements that makes the marine park famous! Several places around the fjord and the river offer spectacular whale watching lookout points directly from the shore.

Reservations are recommended. Contact the selected company directly before you arrive.

PREPARING FOR YOUR VISIT

Depending on the region, you can:
• Whale watch from the shore
• Take a boat tour
• Go sea kayaking
• Explore trails and lookout points
• Visit the interpretation centres and museum
• Discover marine life through diving (for experienced visitors)

The marine park has more than one entrance. You can access it from four regions of Quebec: Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, Côte-Nord, Charlevoix and Bas-Saint-Laurent. Sea excursions, lookout points, interpretation centres and marine park activities can be accessed from each of these regions.

Access to the marine park territory is free. Sea excursions, museum and interpretation centre visits and some hikes are paid activities. Check with the company before your visit.

Yes. The territory is accessible at all times. However, most of the sites located around the Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park and the whale watching cruises are open from May to October.

You can still enjoy the scenic land lookout points, trails and coastal villages, or visit another interpretation centre that is open in the area.

Even in the middle of summer, the temperature at sea and on the shores is generally cooler. The water temperature, which is about 4°C, cools the air above the surface of the park. Wearing warm, comfortable clothing is strongly recommended.
In addition to bringing a good windbreaker and binoculars, we recommend that you bring the following items:
• Sunglasses,
• Sunscreen,
• Water bottle,
• Scarf,
• Pants,
• Tuque or hat,
• Gloves,
• Closed-toe shoes,
• Binoculars.

No, the use of drones is prohibited above the marine protected area and in places administered by Parks Canada.
Check with Transport Canada to find out where you can fly your drone legally.

Yes! Several interpretation centres, lookout points and guided activities are suitable for both children and adults.

The Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park is surrounded by four regions with a wide array of accommodation options. See the regional tourism associations to discover the various options, or stop by a tourist information office along the way. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially during peak season (mid-July to the end of August).

If you want to visit one area of the marine park, you can certainly do that in one day. As the territory is vast, we recommend planning 1 to 3 days to fully enjoy the landscapes, activities and various regions of the marine park.

NAVIGATING WITH YOUR WATERCRAFT

Yes, it’s possible. Specific navigation rules apply in the marine park. Make sure you know the rules before you leave.

It is mandatory to maintain a minimum distance from whales and avoid any behaviour that could disturb them. The Navigating Whale Habitat course can help you prepare for your outing.

Yes, while following the safety rules and weather conditions. The river and fjord waters can be cold and changing: check the forecasts and prioritize guided activities if you are a beginner.
